Home insurance subsidence threat
Homeowners are being urged to ensure their home is adequately protected from the dangers of subsidence.
The advice from Halifax Home Insurance claims that planting trees and vegetation too close to a property can trigger "major structural damage".
Neil Curling, spokesperson for Halifax Home Insurance said: "People do plant trees too close to houses and they bring about the majority of subsidence insurance claims that we face.
"When people plant trees they plant them as young saplings in the garden and obviously they are going to prove no problem whatsoever [until] after a good number of years."
Mr Curling added that being adequately insured did not necessarily mean that all costs against subsidence would be covered, adding: "Don't forget though that there will usually be a £1000 policy excess to pay on subsidence, plus the inconvenience of the damage done to a house."
According to advice from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) solving subsidence is a lengthy process, taking up to two years to rectify
